Wireless Innovation goes to Downing Street

DOWNING Street, no less, sought the advice of Gloucestershire business Wireless Innovation Ltd.

Keen to keep its finger on the pulse of the issues facing small and medium-sized businesses Gordon Brown’s team invited four South West companies to the gathering.

It is another feather in the cap of Churcham-based Wireless Innovation, which formed after a management buy-out in 2004.

“We are seeing a continuing expansion to our overseas business. The result is we have found ourselves working closely with the UKTI (UK Trade & Investment) to help break into markets overseas. As a result of this we have been invited to meet with the Prime Minister to talk about how the Government can support small and medium-sized businesses,” said Phil Rouse, managing director of Wireless Innovation.

Graham Symonds, senior international trade adviser for the UKTI , said: “We nominated Wireless Innovation because we thought they were a very good example of the type of innovative company that exists in the South West.”

He added: “Wireless Innovation is unique in many ways. It offers a very flexible service which is very hard to deliver in its particular markets. It can take a problem and come up with solutions for clients.

“But in terms of the challenges it faces, they are very similar to those faced by many small and medium-sized companies.”

Wireless Innovation Ltd is focused on delivering satellite and Wireless services to businesses, particularly utility companies, Renewable energy, and local Government organisations.

“As an example we have managed to secure major contracts with one of the largest wind energy assesment companies in the world in the United States. Not only do they buy our hardware but we supply the services as well. We have hundreds of clients in 60 countries now,” said Mr Rouse.

“One of the key aspects of our success is the understanding of the clients requirements and delivering a high quality service, with our support team at the end of the phone or e mail even on Christmas day, it makes a huge difference in ensuring the services are second to none” said Tony Martin, technical director of Wireless Innovation.

“We also have customers in the Canadian logging market. We have our products out in the field helping in the communications & logistics of harvesting the trees in the remote areas of the renewable forests.

“I think our message to Westminster will be about the help UKTI has been. There has been a sea-change in the way it approaches things and how it helps SMEs. It is much more streamlined. There is much less bureaucracy, but there is still a lot to be done, especially in these challenging times.”

In addition, with the help of the UKTI, the firm’s commercial director, Jeff Martin, and Tony Martin are due to visit the British Embassy in Washington  to begin the planning for the next phase of our export growth into North America.

Because of these emerging and growing markets the firm now employs 17 staff and since 2006 has doubled its turnover.
